RECYCLED TOLIET PAPER

Toilet tissue made from recycled paper is made from both colored and white stock, with staples and pins removed. The paper goes into a huge vat called a pulper that combines it with hot water and detergents to turn it into a liquid slurry. The recycled pulp then goes through a series of screens and rinses to remove paper coatings and inks. The pulp is whitened somewhat and sanitized with oxygen-based products like peroxide. It then goes through steps 7 through 10 like virgin paper products, producing a cheaper, less-white paper.

Raw Materials

Toilet paper is generally made from new or “virgin” paper, using a combination of softwood and hardwood trees. Softwood trees such as Southern pines and Douglas firs have long fibers that wrap around each other; this gives paper strength. Hardwood trees like gum, maple and oak have shorter fibers that make a softer paper. Toilet paper is generally a combination of approximately 70% hardwood and 30% softwood.

But paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. It can only be recycled four to six times, as the fibres get shorter and weaker each time. Some virgin pulp must be introduced into the process to maintain the strength and quality of the fibre, so we will never completely eradicate the need for virgin fibre, no matter how much we recycle.

Behind the label: Recycled Toilet Tissue

Does recycled paper save trees? Yes – and given that each European uses 13kg of toilet tissue per year, equivalent to around 22 billion rolls Europe-wide, recycled toilet tissue has the potential to save a lot of trees. Does it reduce energy consumption? Yes. Producing recycled paper involves between 28 to 70 per cent less energy consumption than making virgin paper, and uses less water. For every tonne of paper used for recycling, the savings are at least 30,000 litres of water, 3,000 to 4,000 kWh electricity (enough for an average three-bedroom house for one year) and up to 95 per cent of air pollutants.

Contexual Studies(Production of Bleaching Toilet Roll)

Economy

How does the bleaching of white toliet paper effect the people that make it in low wage countires?

How does bleaching effect us when we use it?

Is slightly tinted coloured toliet paper better for yout bum?

What Brands are the best to use and what brands do we avoid?

QUOTE: Bleaching is not only for aesthetic purposes – it also removes the lignin or glue from the wood. The removal of lignin helps improve the strength, feel and shelf life of their tissue and paper.

Unfortunately, most paper mills and companies like Kimberly Clark use chlorine to bleach their toilet paper. The chlorine bleaching process creates many incredibly toxic by-products including dioxins which end up in our water systems and soils.

  • Unbleached: Completely natural – no bleach added. May not be a winner on softness or comfort.
  • Processed Chlorine Free (PCF): Recycled paper bleached with oxygen, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide. Examples brands of PCF toilet paper: Seventh Generation, Green Forest, Planet, 365 Whole Foods, Earth First. See the NRDC’s toilet paper comparison chart.
  • Totally Chlorine Free (TCF): Non-recycled paper bleached with oxygen, ozone, or hydrogen.

Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF): Paper bleached with chlorine dioxide. This process releases fewer dioxins than bleaching with chlorine gas, but it is still is harmful to the environment. Examples brands of ECF toilet paper: Charmin, Quilted Northern, Cottonelle, Angle Soft, Kleenex, Safeway Select

  • Chlorine Gas: Dioxins galore!

Green Peace

After looking at recoiled toilet roll, green peace’s web page caught my attention, when they quoted ’ our experts have carefully evaluated over 100 brands that contain 100% overall recycled content; contain at least 50% post-consumer recycled content;and are bleached without toxic chlorine compounds’

Consumers Choice:

I feel its important that when doing your weekly food shopping or just popping to the corner shop that you make an informed decision on what toilet roll you do buy.

Do you go for the cheapest? the most eye-catching packaging design? the colour? the type/discription of the brand?

And to not only make a decision as a consumer but as someone who is concerned about the world too.

Market & Trend Research project

Global ——- Economy ——- Lifestyle —— Trend

Economy is good & bad, to think about the effects of spending money in stores and online and considering more about the enviroment. As a consumer we buy and over spend on a regular basis and we feel pressured to buy!

Lifestyle, advertising/consumerism. global infulnces on the high street and high market when it comes to trends, very current. and us as consumers having a more international taste.

Global, Highstreet shops such as topshop are very popular to consumers and we are losing independent shops on the high street etc. Food is also being brought/shipped over to the Uk because it is cheaper. And we how have a higher immigration rate as we have low cost air lines.

How Trends are created:

Global Color research works in collaboraton with international colour professionals from various market sectors. They think about lifestyle, social and social networking and economy and create research and trend ideas and discuss further in trend market/global meetings.

When mindmapping colour infomation is it important to understand the ricrection of colour as a whole for the season so you can later define the key colours for the product and market.
